On March 14, 2022, Betong airport received its first commercial passenger flight. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha welcomed Flight DD6260, a Nok Air flight from Bangkok. He was joined by Anutin Charnvirakul, his deputy, and Anupong Paojinda, the Interior Minister.
Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, the government’s spokesperson, said the government will promote Betong, Thailand’s southernmost district as a tourist destination, particularly considering its near to Malaysia. The recently completed airport has a single 1,800-metre runway suitable for smaller turboprop aircraft such as Bombardier Q-400s and ATR-72s. The airport passenger terminal has an area of 7,000 square meters.
The new airport will enhance connectivity in the Betong district. The spokesman said that the district was previously only accessible via roads that cut through mountains, adding that the airport’s launch is consistent with the government’s policy of continuously improving the country’s transport infrastructure.
Along with connecting the district of Betong to the rest of Thailand, the airport has the ability to facilitate as a hub for regional flights between Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. PM Prayut expressed his gratitude to the locals for their cooperation during the airport’s development.
