The Civil Aviation Administration of China CAAC has requested more flights between China and Thailand, a clear sign of bringing back Chinese tourism to Thailand. As of today, there are 3 weekly flights connecting Thailand and China, but the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand CAAT said that it has received a letter from the CAAC requesting an increase from 3 to 15 weekly flights.
Before the pandemic, China has traditionally been a key source of tourists to Thailand. Therefore, more flights could provide a significant boost to Thailand’s tourism. The CAACT said that these proposed flights are mostly for business trips and other necessary travels since China’s tight Covid travel restrictions are still in effect.
In response to the CAAC’s request for additional flights into Thailand, the Thai government has been asked to increase the number of flights departing the kingdom for China. Despite having limited capacity at some of China’s big airports like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, they have requested authorities for a list of Thai-based airlines and routes they may be interested in operating. The airports in China will then decide if they can accept flights from Thailand.
The plant will be explored with all Thai-based airlines, and the CAAT will create a list to be submitted to China within the following week. The flights would then be expedited and if Chinese airports can accept them, they might begin as early as September.
While the increase in the number of flights connecting Thailand and China will mostly be for necessary travel, it sets the framework for when China removes its strict pandemic restrictions, and tourism can resume, something Thailand’s tourism industry is looking forward to.
