covid visa extension

Tomorrow is the deadline to apply 60-day “Covid” visa extension which is no longer available to people on a Non-Immigrant Visa. The extension is for people who cannot travel back to their home countries because of the pandemic. The deadline has been extended multiple times without an official announcement from the Thai Immigration Bureau.

The extension was first offered to most expats in Thailand.  However, since the Covid-19 situation has improved and travel restrictions progressively eased, Thai Immigration became more selective in granting extensions. Those who entered the country on a Tourist Visa or with a visa exemption may ask for an extension. However, approval is at the officer’s discretion and will rely on the present situation. According to a new rule, persons having a Visa on Arrival are no longer eligible for the extension.

Russian and Ukrainian travelers who are unable to return home due to their current situation in Ukraine may request a free 30-day visa extension.

Those who have expired Non-Immigrant Visas, including those in Thailand for studies or work need to get a stamp allowing an extra 7 days in the country to book flights and finalize arrangements before departing.

Some foreigners, particularly those who worked in Thailand during the pandemic have criticized the Immigration Bureau’s decision to prohibit those on a Non-Immigrant Visa, particularly those who’ve been working and paying taxes from filing for the “Covid” visa extension if they quit or lose their jobs.
