The significant increase in the number of travelers at Suvarnabhumi Airport has spurred the Ministry of Transport to address the challenges travelers are experiencing.  With more immigration counters and improved efficiency of key services, the goal is to enhance the overall experience for passengers.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob recently visited Suvarnabhumi Airport to assess the situation and investigate the availability of the facilities. After conducting a thorough review, the minister acknowledged the need for more arrival counters to keep pace with the increasing number of travelers.

In response, the Ministry of Transport has decided to convert a small garden near the arrival counters into 60 new immigration counters, which will have the capacity to serve an additional 3,000 travelers per hour. The entire project is projected to take around 6 months, with the start date to be determined.

In addition to increasing the number of immigration counters, the Ministry of Transport is also taking steps to improve the efficiency of the arrival check-in counter and taxi service counter to reduce waiting time. Measures will be put in place to ensure that luggage is delivered to passengers in a timely manner, reducing frustration caused by delayed luggage. The airport will hire a supplier to operate the baggage carousel, increasing the total number of lanes to three. The taxi service at the airport has also been increased to 3,800 cars per day.

The airport handled an average of 829 flights per day, of which 561 were from overseas. The airport served 138,287 passengers daily, of whom 101,551 were international and 36,736 were domestic.

The increase in travelers is largely due to the relaxation of COVID-19 measures and China reopening its border on January 8. The ministry believes that the number of tourists will continue to increase in the second half of 2023.
