As a result of the expected increase of Omicron cases in Thailand, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha supports extending the suspension of the Test & Go entry scheme. According to Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the initiative was first stopped because of concerns about the worldwide issue of the Omicron variant. There are reports that Omicron infections have been discovered in individuals coming through Test & Go.

“In the interest of public health and safety, we’ve decided to extend the suspension of the Test & Go program. We will submit the idea to the CCSA for approval.”

According to the Bangkok Post, travelers whose Thailand Pass applications were accepted under the Test & Go scheme should now enter the country by January 10. The government first declared this on December 21, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs later changed the regulation. Now, Anutin adds, people who enter the country after January 10 will be eligible to enter either via the Phuket sandbox plan or through quarantine.

According to the minister, 229 more Omicron infections were recorded in Thailand yesterday, bringing the total to 1,780. According to Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrajit of the Public Health Ministry, some clusters have been connected to restaurants and pubs that did not adhere to Covid-Free safety standards. He advises consumers of such establishments to undergo antigen testing and work from home for at least two weeks. Those who are unable to work from home should do two antigen tests during the first week and continue to evaluate their symptoms for the next two weeks.

Furthermore, government spokeswoman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said that all government agencies, financial institutions like banks, and private sector firms are being urged to do antigen testing on their staff in order to halt the spread of the Omicron variant.
