City of Bangkok

The official name of Thailand’s capital is being renamed “Krung Thep Maha Nakhon,” but the common name “Bangkok” will remain recognized. The Thai Cabinet has given approval to the name change, but the directive must be reviewed by government authorities.

Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, or simply “Krung Thep” as the majority of Thais pronounce it, are abbreviations for the capital’s ceremonial name, which is…

Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit

This is translated to “City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra’s behest.”

Since November 2001, the term “Bangkok” has been in use. It originates from an older section of the city presently known as Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai.

The Office of the Royal Society Thailand or ORST recently announced Krung Thep Maha Nakhon would become the official name of Thailand’s capital.  The name “Bangkok” will appear in parentheses.

In addition, ORST also updated the official spelling for other countries, including Rome and Roma for Italy’s capital, the change of Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw for Myanmar, and the change of the Kingdom of Nepal to the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
