As tourism surges, the Transport Thailand of Thailand is ordered to seek additional international flights to Thailand. Thailand PM Prayut Chan-o-cha issued the directive for the ministry to get in touch with airline companies. The ten millionth foreign travelers are expected to arrive in Thailand on December 10 (Saturday). Officials expect the numbers will grow further as the high season starts.
Bangkok Post reported that orders have been placed for more service personnel on the ground to assist tourists. In related developments, the Tourism and Sports Ministry has apparently deferred its proposal to the Thai cabinet to allow nighttime entertainment businesses to remain open until 4 am. Now, on December 20, the recommendation to the cabinet will coincide with the “We Travel Together” tourist promotion.
According to the Tourism and Sports Minister, however, such establishments may be permitted to remain open past 2 a.m. starting in March. The government selected areas in 9 provinces for the program, with Patong’s Bangla Road being the first to remain open until 4 am. Critics believe that permitting such establishments to remain open later will increase drunk driving accidents.
Anutin Charnvirakul, the Deputy Prime Minister, concurred that entertainment venues should close at 2 a.m., citing the Covid-19 incident and the public’s safety and health.
