Thailand Steering Towards a Superyacht Haven

Thailand is poised to redefine its position on the global maritime map, following a meeting in Phuket that may transform the superyacht landscape. The meeting, led by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat, brought together luminaries such as Surat Sirisayat, director of the Ship Registration Standards Bureau, and Phuket Marine chief Natchapong Pranit. The assembly drew over 100 stakeholders from government, tourism, and marine industries, all keen to deliberate on regulatory enhancements.

Central to the discussions was a proposal from the Ministry of Transport, introducing new standards for granting operational permissions to cruise and sports boats, particularly those owned by foreigners. This move aligns with Thailand’s strategic ambitions to meet international maritime norms and establish itself as a top-tier destination for maritime tourism.

A notable proposal from the Thai Yachting Business Association (TYBA) was the redefinition of a superyacht—from vessels over 30 meters (98 feet) to those exceeding 24 meters (79 feet). This change could broaden the eligibility for new charter licenses, coupled with requisite insurance coverages, details of which were anticipated to unfold during the discussions.

The attendees were encouraged to voice their insights and recommendations, with the Ship Registration Standards Bureau set to integrate this feedback into the final draft of the announcement. This collaborative approach aims to refine policies that are congruent with both local needs and international expectations, benefiting the entire maritime community.

The Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) team, notably including six members led by APS Phuket co-founder Tanyuta (Jojo) Singhmanee, also marked their presence. APS co-founder Gordon Fernandes acknowledged the positive strides being made in revising charter regulations and the adjustments to vessel size requirements, which are expected to attract more majestic yachts to Thailand’s pristine waters.

The outcomes from this meeting promise to significantly influence the operational landscape for superyachts in Thai waters. With these strategic policy adjustments, Thailand is on course to enhance its allure as a world-leading maritime destination.
