The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like to inform everyone that the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, one of the most famous festivals of the year will be held from July 11-17 2022.
The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival is a long-standing festival in the Northeastern (Isan) city of Ubon Ratchathani, which commemorates the beginning of the 3-month Buddhist Lent season. The celebration is a vibrant display of Isan culture and tradition, accompanied by music, dancing, and the famous march of finely carved candle sculptures through the streets. Typically, these sculptures portray various elements of religious life and are dedicated to temples.
The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival 2022 will take place from July 11 to 17 in Thung Sri Mueang, a public park placed in the city center in front of City Hall. 5 district groups will display their lifestyles and identities via cultural performances, candle-making demonstrations, candle casting, local goods booths, and other activities.
From 1-12 July, festival attendees are welcome to visit candle-making communities located at temples registered for the destival and experience the practice of sculpting incredible wax figures and sculptures firsthand.
Wat Si Ubon Rattanaram and the grounds in front of the old city hall are also significant locations for the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival 2022. There will be a candle ceremony, a candle contest, a nighttime parade with artistically carved candles, and a light-and-sound display here on Wednesday, July 13 (also Asalha Bucha Day). On Thursday, July 14 (also Buddhist Lent Day), there will be parades of artistically carved candles and wax displays throughout the day and evening, a candle offering ritual, a light-and-sound show, and the announcement of the winners of the candle contest.
From July 14-17, the winner down to 2nd runners-up award-winning candles will be on display, and from July 18-31, all of the event’s candles may be seen at various temples.
Those in Ubon Ratchathani for the candle festival may like to visit Ban Khampun, a renowned silk weaving production center, to taste different Isan cultures.
