70% of locals are inoculated

According to the Yala provincial governor, Betong will reopen its doors to visitors on December 1 since the province achieved a vaccination rate of above 70%.

Betong might reopen as early as next month since 90% of residents in Mueang and 70% in Betong have been inoculated against COVID-19.

Mr. Pirom said that a number of tourist attractions in the region, including the Anyorweng skywalk, historical Malayan communist tunnel, flower fields, and hot springs are prepared to accept tourists who adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

Betong Airport has passed operational testing and is prepared to open, he added. He said that Bangkok Airways and Nok Air showed interest in flying into the area.

Deputy President of the Betong Tourism Association Narin Rueangwongsa told reports that the association has talked with members of the tourism industry, who expressed an interest for the province to reopen next month.

Mr. Narin said that tourism businesses in Betong had agreed to participate in the government’s tourism stimulus programs, which would run until January 2022.

Once the province is reopened, around 500 million baht of income is expected to the economy, he added.

According to Pruek Wongnamroj, president of the Betong Hotel Club, 26 of 28 hotels in Betong district, totaling 1,773 rooms, have been authorized to accept tourists under the Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) standards, and 2 other accommodations are in the process of being approved.

Mr. Pruek said that all executive officers and employees have been fully vaccinated and are checked weekly using antigen test kits.

Accommodations are required to sanitize their floors and contact points every 2 hours.
