Spring Airlines and Juneyao Air resumed flights to Thailand on January 18. The demand was high and the flights were almost full on the first day.
It was the first set of international flights from China to Thailand since the pandemic, signaling a recovery in the overseas travel market.
The initial route was from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Thailand’s Chiang Mai. The Juneyao Air flight was approximately 99% full, with 201 people on board. The following route was between Shanghai Pudong and Phuket.
In the first week after flights restarted, the average passenger load factor on the two routes topped 80%, according to Juneyao Air, which added that passenger demand would rebound due to the rising popularity of overseas travel.
Soon, Juneyao Air intends to boost the number of flights between Shanghai and Phuket to 10 per week, and it will keep making efforts to broaden the route network in Thailand. The number of weekly flights between Shanghai Pudong and Bangkok will grow from one to seven.
The airline said it will increase the number of flights from Shanghai Pudong to Bangkok to 8 weekly flights based on market conditions and customer demand.
Spring Airlines restarted service from Shanghai to Phuket after a 3-year hiatus. The first flight carried 181 passengers.
Spring Airlines said that it will operate 4 daily direct flights from Shanghai to Phuket before the pandemic and will expedite the return of service between China and Thailand.
Thailand welcomed thousands of Chinese tourists to Bangkok on January 9, the first group to arrive after China announced opening its borders and allowing its locals to travel overseas on January 8.
