Get Ready For Hok Peng Festival 2023

The Hok Peng Festival to Worship Phra That Chao Phu Phiang Chae Haeng will be held at Wat Phra That Chae Haeng, Phu Phiang district, Nan province, from the 28th of February to the 6th of March 2023. This sacred temple, located in Nan province, is the centerpiece of the local faith and is regarded as the most venerated temple in the area.
The Hok Peng Festival is held annually on the full moon of the sixth Northern Thai lunar month, known as “Hok Peng,” which will fall on the 6th of March this year. The bell-shaped Chedi of Phra That Chae Haeng, built during the reign of Chao Phraya Kan Mueang (ruler of Nan from 1323-1395), houses Lord Buddha’s hair relics and the wrist of his left hand. This year marks the 670th anniversary of the Phra That, which also coincides with the Phra That of the Year of the Rabbit.
Throughout the week-long festival, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Buddhist activities, including worship ceremonies, merit-making, and blessing rituals, and paying homage to monks. They can also indulge in the local flavors and handicrafts sold at the ancient-style market and shopping street. The festival showcases Nan’s unique traditions through folk performances, cultural processions, competitions for processions, traditional drum performances, and lantern decorations.
To commemorate this significant event, a series of Buddhist ceremonies and community tourism activities will take place throughout the year. Visitors can join one or all of the three specially-designed tourism routes to pay homage to Nan’s sacred Buddhist objects: four revered Buddhist monks, five gods, and nine Phra That. Alternatively, they can opt to participate in an activity to pay homage to the nine sacred objects within Wat Phra That Chae Haeng.
In support of low-carbon tourism, a cycling activity has been launched in Nan town, encouraging visitors to explore the area’s attractions by bicycle.
Visitors who were born in the Year of the Rabbit can avail themselves of over 100 discounts of up to 50% at establishments in Nan, including accommodations, restaurants, cafes, silverware shops, and local fabric shops.
Year-round workshops are available, showcasing local wisdom and traditions, including the making of local fabric, food, handicrafts, weaving, and Muay Thai.
