The percentage of Russian tourists visiting Thailand has surged by 600%. There are a lot of factors that make Thailand the ideal destination for Russians escaping the harsh winter in their country this year.
The favorite vacation destinations of Russian travelers are Phuket and Pattaya with 1.48 million arrivals in 2019.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia was Thailand’s 7th biggest travel market. But when the pandemic hit, foreign tourists ceased and Russian-language restroom signs in Pattaya temporarily lost their function.
In July, Thailand reopened its borders, and tourists increased dramatically. Since the Russia-Ukraine war, the Russian market has seen a remarkable resurgence, making Russia the third-largest market last month behind India and Malaysia.
When Vladimir Putin announced mandatory military service in September, around 700,000 Russians left the country. Some traveled to neighboring countries like Finland and Kazakhstan, while others traveled to Turkey, Serbia, the United Arab Emirates, and Thailand.
Thailand made it clear that Russians are welcome to Thailand this winter and the country organized chartered flights for Russians.
Starting October 1, 2022, Thailand’s decision to extend visa exemption for visitors from 30 to 45 days, making it the best destination for Russians. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand or TAT, Russians want to stay in Thailand longer compared to other foreign tourists.
Aeroflot started direct flights between Moscow and Phuket on October 30, anticipating Russian travelers throughout the winter.
The return of the Russians, who contribute heavily to Thailand’s tourism earnings, is welcomed by Thailand’s tourism sector. TAT anticipates that overall tourist arrivals will reach 11.5 million on December 31, 2022, which is higher than TAT’s target of 10 million visitors by the end of the year.
