Thailand urgently wants to rebuild its shattered tourism industry, starting by loosening entry restrictions and recommendations for development continue to spread. One of the proposals is the development and marketing of 3 islands in the Gulf of Thailand as an “entertainment cluster”.
Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Phang Ngan tourism operators support the plan of transforming the islands into a destination for world-class entertainment. The plan comes at a time when overseas arrivals increase due to the removal Test & Go entry program. After 2 years of economic impact brought on by the pandemic, the tourism industry on the islands has welcomed the increasing number of tourists and the relief for the local economy.
According to the Bangkok Post, a newspaper writer originally proposed advertising the 3 islands as an entertainment cluster and local tourism operators accepted the proposal. However, it will be impossible without approval from the government and support from the business sector.
Those in favor of the plan agree that the re-opening of nightlife would allow the islands to be advertised for entertainment with bars, clubs, and similar facilities resuming operations. Combo Beach Hotel Samui’s Thanapon Uthaiwannaporn asserts that the island’s economy needs assistance and that the idea of making the island an entertainment cluster is unique.
As Thailand strives to rebuild its Covid-ravaged economy, several marketing strategies for its tourism spots have been proposed. Some of them are golf quarantine packages, medical tourism hubs, wellness retreats, superyacht hubs, and a world-class medicinal marijuana center have all been proposed.
