The famous island province was named Thailand’s top tourist destination this year. From January to October, Phuket attracted 2.32 million foreign tourists, followed by Chon Buri (975,026), Surat Thani (606,812), Songkhla (581,808), and Chiang Mai (496,111).

Tipanan Sirichana, the deputy government spokesperson, announced that Phuket generated THB 127.9 billion baht in tourism revenue, the highest of any province. Followed by Chonburi (THB 13.2 billion baht), Surat Thani (THB 7.5 billion baht), Chiang Mai (THB 4.2 billion baht), and Songkhla (THB 3.6 billion baht).

The government spokesperson said that the cooperation of locals following public health measures has helped the tourism industry bounce back and achieve a V-shaped recovery and drew 10 million tourists to the country”.

The spokesperson added that since the launch of the Phuket Sandbox, Phuket gradually recovered from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On December 10, Thailand received its 10 millionth tourists this year. According to the TAT governor, Thailand is on track to welcome around 11 million visitors this year.

Russians are the leading tourist group in Phuket. Last month, 55,097 Russian visitors arrived in Phuket, followed by 26,525 Indian visitors, according to Phuket Immigration.

Russian tourists are filling up chartered flights to Phuket and Pattaya. Less than 2 weeks after the historical return of Russian airlines to Phuket, Aeroflot increased the number of direct flights to the island. The leading airline of Russia announced on November 12 that it would introduce 14 additional weekly flights between Russia and Phuket.

Despite the effect of the pandemic on Thailand’s tourism industry, Phuket has retained its image as the most popular vacation spot in the world.
