Before the holiday island reopens to international visitors on July 1, all people directly connected in the tourism sector in Phuket will be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Phumkit Raktaengam, president of the Phuket Tourist Association, announced Monday that 94,000 persons engaged in the province’s tourism business would receive Covid-19 vaccines.

All individuals with registered household documentation in the province were also targeted for vaccinations, he added.

Around 400,000 people are registered as residents in Phuket. Approximately 500,000 Thai and foreign people are employed on the island in tourism and other industries.

The island’s vaccination campaign aims to reach 70% of the residents by the end of June, allowing it to reopen to foreign tourists in July.

On Monday, provincial deputy governor Piyapong Chuwong said that all residents with household registration on the island would be prioritized for vaccination.

He was speaking in response to requests from people requesting that the province investigate vaccinations for inhabitants living beyond the island.
