Similan Islands Scheduled for Closure Next Month

Thailand’s stunning Similan Islands, a haven for travelers seeking pristine beaches and world-class diving experiences, will be closing for environmental rehabilitation starting May 19th. After a bustling Songkran holiday season that attracted thousands of visitors, the islands will take a much-needed break to restore their natural beauty.

The Similan Islands Marine Park will remain closed during the monsoon season, with plans to reopen on October 15, 2023, giving nature ample time to recover from the busy high season.

During the Songkran festivities (April 11-14, 2023), Mu Ko Similan National Park saw an influx of tourists, with thousands contributing substantial admission fees each day. In 2023, admission prices will be 500 baht for foreign adults, 300 baht for foreign children, 100 baht for Thai adults, and 50 baht for Thai children.

Located 70 km off the coast of Phang Nga province, the 11-island archipelago of Mu Ko Similan National Park is renowned for its vibrant coral reefs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, unique rock formations, and lush tropical forests. Established as a national park in 1982, the Similan Islands have become a top attraction for visitors from around the world.

To protect the delicate ecosystem, the Thai government has limited daily visitor numbers to 3,325, down from a previous peak of 7,000 per day. Each monsoon season, the islands close for ecological rejuvenation.
