As Thailand recovers from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Public Health has said that medical tourism is the key that will generate more revenue for the country.  The Ministry of Public Health has launched the “Health for Wealth” campaign whose goal is to boost the country’s economy by promoting medical tourism.

According to the Medical Tourism Association, Thailand is ranked 5 in the world in health tourism. Thailand is rated highly for its affordable yet high-quality medical treatment. The cost of living in the country is advantageous for patients who need a longer stay to recover from their treatments. Anutin Charnvirakul, the Minister of Public Health, said that there’s an effective system for medical visas and infrastructure in the country.

This year’s medical tourism earnings are 47% higher than last year with around THB 11.9 billion baht generated by travelers seeking medical treatment. These numbers are based on research by the Department of Health Service Support and the Bank of Thailand that surveyed 30 hospitals.

The most sought therapy are cardiovascular-related conditions, cancer, metabolism, neurological disorders, and bones, joint, and dental issues. These categories generate the highest hospital revenue. Most patients come are from China, Cambodia, Kuwait, Japan, and Myanmar. Last year, medical tourists spent an average of THB 35,000 baht for treatment.

Medical care is unlikely to become Thailand’s most popular attraction. According to a poll conducted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in July and August, 90% of respondents prefer eating Thai cuisine, 48% of people appreciate Thai beaches and massage treatments, and 46% of visitors enjoy learning about the kingdom’s history.

But the Ministry of Public Health thinks that Thailand could strengthen its reputation as a destination for medical tourism and wellness retreats, therefore supporting the country’s economy with its new Health for Wealth campaign.
