Thailand has set its sights on becoming the premier hotspot for Muslim tourists globally within five years. The push to attract this segment comes in response to the upward trend of Muslim travelers, both in numbers and spending power, said Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek.

Highlighting the growing importance of Muslim visitors, Dhnadirek revealed that their numbers swelled to over three million last year, a significant leap from the 875,043 visitors recorded in 2017. These figures from the Department of Tourism (DoT) indicate that the average Muslim traveler stays in Thailand for about 13 days, spending around 6,000 baht daily.

To achieve this goal, the DoT has rolled out a five-year blueprint from 2023 to 2027. The strategy will not only elevate the overall experience but will introduce an array of halal offerings tailored to the needs of Muslim visitors. Technology will also play a pivotal role, making their travels smoother and more enjoyable.

In its quest to shine as a prime choice for Muslim travelers, the DoT actively collaborates with diverse sectors to showcase Thailand as a culturally sensitive destination that honors Muslim traditions.

Dhnadirek is hopeful about the nation’s trajectory, stating, “The significance of the Muslim tourism sector isn’t lost on us. We’re hopeful that future administrations will uphold this vision.”

The Global Muslim Travel Index 2023 by Mastercard placed Muslim-majority countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, at the top, followed closely by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Turkey.

In related news, Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry shared that the nation has already greeted over 16.472 million international tourists this year, resulting in tourism revenue of about 689 billion baht. Leading this pack were visitors from Malaysia, China, South Korea, India, and Russia.
