The Thai Embassy in China released a statement on Weibo stressing that the quality and safety of Chinese visitors’ travels and their positive perceptions of Thailand are of utmost significance to Thailand. Recently, several unfavorable remarks about tourism in Thailand have been spreading on Chinese social media, and some spectacular rumors have turned into a hot topic, alarming the Thai Prime Minister’s office. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha of Thailand asked the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to discuss the issue. This also demonstrates that Thailand’s professed “high regard” for Chinese visitors is more than words.

Tourism is one of the foundations of Thailand’s economy, and Chinese tourists make up the biggest group of foreign visitors to Thailand. Therefore, Thailand has no reason to disregard the opinions of these “major customers.” Honestly, the Thai government’s reaction to associated public opinion is fast and robust, which is essential. It may assist in preventing significant harm to Thailand’s tourism sector’s reputation and prevent the further spread of unfavorable public opinion. But, this “high regard” must finally be represented in the actual experience of travelers. Tourists’ positive word-of-mouth is the most effective method for overcoming negative public perception.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused havoc in Thailand’s tourism sector, and as a consequence, Thailand has greater hopes for the comeback of Chinese visitors. When China had recently opened up outbound travel and several other countries were still suppressing the entry of Chinese visitors, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul, accompanied by other authorities, headed to the airport to greet Chinese visitors and sent Chinese New Year greetings in Chinese days later, which made Chinese citizens feel warm and friendly, thereby boosting Thailand’s tourism sector.

Thailand’s tourism sector has always been very competitive in terms of the natural landscape, cultural attractions, and service quality. Thai travel is prevalent among Chinese visitors due to the country’s cheap costs. We assess that the majority of current issues are either technical or temporary and should be addressed on an individual basis. For the safety concerns of Chinese visitors, the Thai government clearly devotes considerable focus to the matter.
