TAT stretched its target market as part of its objective to revive the country’s tourism industry. The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s new strategy is to target not just “high-quality” travelers, but also first-time tourists to the land of smiles.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn is optimistic and confident that the bottom point for the country’s tourism industry has passed and recovery is starting with 2,000 to 3,000 foreign tourist arrivals daily after the November 1 reopening.  However, he urges everyone in the tourism industry and related businesses to collaborate in order to serve high-quality tourists as foreign travel arrivals increase.

The main goal is to develop a growing and sustainable tourism industry by attracting a diverse group of these high-quality travelers and providing them a great experience while in the country. The focus should be set on attracting new tourists who have never visited the country, especially those from rapidly rising populations such as India.

TAT reported that if the country captures even just a small percentage of India’s population, it will result in millions of new tourists.  In addition, there are millions of Indian communities worldwide, which along with other South Asians, make for 24% of the global population.

Additionally, the Indian market provides a wide range of subgenres to target, including family outings, hosting Bollywood film production, weddings, and the country’s 600 million young travelers. Thailand is a highly popular tourist destination for Indians, with the only downside being a lack of familiar dishes that other countries provide.

Additionally, the government aims to expand local tourism to 1/3 of total tourism in Thailand, with places like Kanchanaburi, Khao Lak, Nan, Nakhon Nayok, Phetchaburi, and Sukhothai already witnessing rises in visitor numbers. As inoculation rates increase in Thailand, tourist numbers are likely to increase steadily.
