In a recent 2024 SEA Travel Insights report from Grab, Thailand has emerged as the premier destination for Southeast Asian tourists. With its enchanting blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Thailand continues to captivate the hearts of travelers across the region.

Chantsuda Thananitayaudom, Senior Director of Commercial and Marketing at Grab Thailand, highlighted the significance of Southeast Asian tourists to the Thai tourism sector. In 2024 alone, Thailand saw an influx of over 10.6 million regional travelers, making up 30% of its total international tourist arrivals.

The Grab survey, which gathered insights from 11,074 participants across six countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand—reveals a robust interest in international travel. An impressive 81% of respondents expressed plans to travel abroad, marking an increase from the previous year’s 72%. Notably, over half (52%) prefer exploring destinations within Southeast Asia, with East Asia following closely behind at 44%.

Thailand’s allure is magnified by its promotion of cultural and festive events, such as the Songkran and Loy Krathong festivals, along with various music and food festivals. These initiatives underscore the Kingdom’s strategic use of soft power to enhance its appeal as a travel destination.

The report also sheds light on the evolving trends among today’s digital-savvy travelers. A significant 86% of respondents are likely to leverage cutting-edge technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence for various travel-related purposes—from researching destinations to itinerary planning.

Independent travel planning continues to gain momentum, with 81% of travelers preferring to curate their own trips. While many opt to book their flights, accommodations, and attractions online, about 18% still choose organized tours for convenience.

Economic considerations are also at the forefront, with 82% setting a travel budget in advance, although budget overruns remain common. Additionally, sustainability is a growing priority among travelers, with 45% consistently choosing eco-friendly options, and 78% willing to pay more for services from businesses committed to sustainable practices.

For those looking to explore Thailand further, the Thailand Privilege Card offers a wealth of benefits that enhance the travel experience, from visa facilitation to exclusive services. Moreover, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) can be an excellent choice for visitors planning longer stays, providing ample opportunity to immerse in the local culture and explore the country’s many wonders.
