Tourism has been hit hard by the pandemic, so the government is turning to cruise ships as a way to bring the industry back to life.

According to Anucha Burapachaisri, a government spokeswoman, the popularity of cruises is on the rise and the global industry is undergoing significant development. During the peak season from October to March, cruise ships carrying an average of 1,800 to 2,400 passengers make one-day stops in Thailand, attracting high-value tourists who spend four to ten times more than regular tourists.

Boat trips, Thai cuisine, spas, cultural performances, and souvenir shopping are among the primary interests of these visitors. Thailand’s ports have been upgraded to accommodate cruise ships, resulting in an increase in the number of ships arriving in the country.

The government also expressed confidence that cruise ships will lead to a growth in tourism revenue. Cruise ship revenue topped THB 4.8 billion in 2019 before the pandemic. The government seeks to develop new forms of tourism.

State agencies have recently collaborated with Netflix to introduce “Uncover Thailand: A Creative Travel Guide,” featuring locations from popular films and television shows set in Thailand and other countries on Netflix. This initiative aims to showcase Thai culture and attract more tourists, especially movie fans.

Spokesperson Anucha said that the Prime Minister is dedicated to promoting new forms of tourism and Thailand’s “soft power,” which will not only create economic and social value but also generate new business opportunities.
